Clinton Hill Public Library - SP 23

Project type

Architecture Design Project

Date

Spring 2023

The project focuses on the idea of the shed or "a building within a building" through the design of a extension of a preexisting branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. The final design was heavily influenced by the Beinecke Library which was my selected building precedent and the Clinton Hill Public Library and neighborhood which was the site. The library's programs were organized by privacy, individual vs group settings, and the need for lighting. Similar to a Russian Doll, the buildings decrease in size while also rotating by another 30 degrees. The brick and glass façade design is based on the programs and help differentiate between the individual buildings. The skin of the building is expanded to include circulation as well as to insulate the more private spaces. The glass atrium draws from the Beinecke marble panels while allows in light as well as creates a gap or extra floor. The brick façade comes from the original library's building material and is perforated at varying scale to allow some light to the inner buildings.
